Metelkova Mesto, a former military barracks turned alternative epicentre, has transformed into a thriving autonomous culture centre. Originally constructed in 1911 by the Austro-Hungarian Army, this unique site encompasses seven barracks buildings spread across a little over three acres of land.
For many years, the military utilised this enclosed neighbourhood until 1991, when Slovenia gained independence from Yugoslavia and the army abandoned the premises. Shortly after, a wave of squatters began to occupy the vacant space, infusing it with their own creativity and individuality.
Today, the buildings within Metelkova are adorned with vibrant graffiti, folk art, intricate tile mosaics, weird sculptures, and thought-provoking punk rock statements.
